How Does Poor Sanitation Affect Your Overall Health?
06 September 2017Sanitation is the act of performing various measures to provide a clean, healthy environment. These measures are not just for home use, as they also are important for a workplace setting. When sanitation is inadequate, germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi and other disease causers can accumulate on surfaces. People who come in contact with them can then become ill.
Some Illnesses and Health Issues That Poor Sanitation Can Cause in Humans
1. Influenza
Influenza is a virus that causes chills, fever, sore throat, sneezing, coughing, headaches, muscle pain, and extreme fatigue. The young and elderly are at high risk for complications from influenza, which can include pneumonia. Flu is another name for influenza. While doctors recommend the flu vaccine to reduce the severity of influenza, you can prevent catching it in the first place by simply washing your hands and sanitizing surfaces in the proper manner.
2. MRSA and Staphylococcus Aureus
Staphylococcus aureus is just one member of the Staphylococcus or staph family of bacteria. This version of staph causes various issues such as skin infections, blood poisoning, food poisoning, and pneumonia. Skin infections typically happen more than the other issues, and can turn into cellulitis or impetigo. The staph bacteria commonly occur in the body and therefore, show up on many surfaces in the hospitals, fitness centers and schools on top of at home and in the workplace. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA is a more serious issue that occurs, as it caused by a form of staph that is antibiotic resistant, which makes it more difficult to treat. Personal contact with an individual suffering from an infection caused from staph is one way of spreading the issue. However, if you come in contact with surfaces that contain the staph bacteria through an open scratch or cut, an infection can occur. Proper sanitation procedures prevent unnecessary contact with the Staphylococcus bacteria.
3. Gastroenteritis
Gastroenteritis causes inflammation and irritations of the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms of this condition include nausea, diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain and vomiting. Bacteria and viruses are the most common cause of this condition. This condition is contagious and is spread by consuming contaminated water or food. Many times, people catch this condition from others through improperly cleansing their hands after handling soiled diapers, having bowel movements, or other contact with fecal matter. An outbreak of this issue typically only lasts for about two days, but in case of a bacterial cause, it could go on for a number of months.
